The iron is more reactive that the copper in solution, and so the copper is displaced by the iron.

Traditional methods of extracting copper from its ore involve digging, moving and disposing of large amounts of rock. This involves noise and dust pollution, and uses large amounts of energy to move and transport the rock. Phytomining avoids this and is better for the environment. It also produces energy when the plants are burned. However, it is a slow process, as it is necessary to wait for the plants to grow, and supply is seasonal rather than continuous.
